The Colombian Association of Audiology ASOAUDIO is a non-profit professional, scientific and social organization made up of professional audiologists and speech language pathologists and/or speech therapists with a graduate degree in audiology. The association is an affiliate of the Colombian Association of Speech Pathology and Speech Therapy (ACTFL), according to law 376 enacted July 4 1997, which regulates the licensing and professional practice of audiologists in the country.
Its vision is to maintain its associates informed and updated, strengthen their professional performance, and promote their academic and social development in order to benefit the community they serve.
As an academic and scientific association, it promotes the continuous update of its members. Over 200 members from all regions of our country, receive information about the activities and events developed at both national and international level in the Audiology area.
It began in 1997 as a response to a need in Colombia for grouping together and organizing professionals and specialists in the field of Audiology since 1992 when the Degree in Audiology first started.
The idea became a reality when on September 10th, 1997 ASOAUDIO became official according to Act 1 of the constitution of the Colombian Association of Audiology.
Since then, the Colombian Association of Audiology - ASOAUDIO, has been committed to its mission and vision. As a result, since 1998 ASOAUDIO has been in charge of hosting an annual event which is not only the way that the association becomes known but also the way that it encourages the spirit of scientific research improving year to year its annual meeting by inviting the most renowned speakers world wide.
All of these activities have enriched the field of Audiology in Colombia, and have allowed the integration and gathering of professionals in the field around topics for scientific investigation. During these 10 years, ASOAUDIO has tried to decentralize its events by allowing other regions of the country to participate and enjoy the importance of these activities and projection of the profession.
During these 10 years there have been 5 boards of directors each of which has served 2 year periods and who have worked jointly in the growth of the association. These boards are in charge of covering professional issues, scientific/continuing education, communication and finance areas through committees.
Currently, it is working intensively in its growth by strengthening its mission and vision through the academic and research updates. In this effort, in July of the current year, our association was accepted as an affiliated member of the International Society of Audiology (ISA) result of a 10 year effort.
Since 1992, when Colombia graduated its first professionals in the field of Phonoaudiology, and specialists in Audiology, a high degree of interest in pursuing access to higher education was demonstrated and as a result there are currently in Colombia five institutions of higher education which are: Institución Universitaria Escuela Colombiana de Rehabilitación, Corporación Universitaria Iberoamericana in the city of Bogotá; Universidad Metropolitana in the city of Barranquilla; Universidad Católica de Manizales and Fundación Universitaria María Cano in the city of Medellín.
As an organization in charge of strengthening the profession at the national level, ASOAUDIO believes that it is necessary to have strategic ties with other associations at the international level in order to transmit the advancements made in the field of audiology in Colombian since its birth in 1992. ASOAUDIO believes in its members and will not undercut any effort in order to have the field of audiology in Colombia be recognized across all institutions and to provide the best care for different populations who benefit on a daily basis from those specialized in Audiology.
